Contextualisation of the sourceThe Times is a long established British newspaper, conservative in nature. This report was one of a number which appeared over the days following the D-Day landings of June 6th 1944.
Interpretation of the sourceThis source gives details of German air attacks on the allied invasion forces. The suggestion is that it was limited and that allied aircraft were successful in dealing with such enemy attacks. Allied aircraft were also used to attack roads to disrupt the movement of enemy forces. The scale of the enemy attack is quite clearly played down in this article and the reality of the attacks needs to be questioned given that the report was probably intended to paint a picture of allied success. Whilst the heroic and historical tone of other, earlier reports is not as strong in this source the success of the allied airforce in defeating the German forces again provides an image of bravery and success. This suggestion of the bravery, heroism and success of the allied forces is indicative of the overall national perspective on this event.
