National Content: Italy

There is no national contemporary perspective on the event. The Nation is still divided in two and subjected by two occupying forces. On top of this, the area under the German occupation experiences a civil war between the anti-fascists and the fascists, a civil war which happens while a national war for the liberation is in course. Approximately 650.000 Italian soldiers are prisoners in the nazi camps. The event is therefore seen through many different perspectives. The only common idea was that the landing was awaited by everyone except that nobody knew when it would happen. Later sources and later publication of contemporary sources will lean toward a more national and official point of view, one that is coherent with a broader international position of Italy within the Atlantic Pact and Nato. The political opposition will also elaborate a perspective which will tend to associate Stalin’s Russia with the German defeat.
