A second front against the Nazis was discussed since 1940, but only in 1942 first preparations started in England. A D-Day at the Atlantic coast was expected from military and civil sides since 1943. The concrete landing in the morning of June, 6th 1944 at several beaches in the Normandie was very careful prepared and unexpected.
