From a military point of view, the Landing on Normandy is presented with a relative objectivity. The means carried out by the airborne forces, the land forces and the naval forces are well related. Twenty four hours after the Landing, the name of the allied generals who lead the operation are made known as well as the numbers of the English and American airborne divisions which are engaged in Normandy, the situation of the forces fighting on the beaches and the offensive main directions, etc. Taking into account the communication possibilities at that time and the difficulties to collect information in the fight zone, we can consider that the Belgian reader was correctly informed about the Landing on Normandy and about the importance of the means carried out.
However, the information sources, almost exclusively German, lay stress on the power of the Allies to better underline their failure. So, the 6th June 1944 is presented as a last chance for the Allies who should miserably failed soon. The heavy losses of the attackers are underlined as well as the “wonderful” resistance of the German forces which would almost end to push the Allies back to the sea.
On the political field, the Landing is interpreted as an attack of the « Barbarians » against the European civilization whereas the German forces are described as the « heroic » defenders of the European civilization. The press, under the heels of the Nazis, presents us Roosevelt and Churchill acting as lackeys of the Soviet Union. It caricatures the American people as an uneducated people doomed to materialism which wants to dictate its way of life to the old Europe, presented as the origin of all civilizations.
In the immediate future, the Landing is perceived as a source of new deprivations and sufferings for the populations located in the fight zone. The population is also put on guard against reprisals that could affect those who would dare to dream of freedom, considering that it’s stupid to think that something could change in their life due to the event.
