National Content: Belgium

We can’t talk about national perspective for this event since the underground press is not represented in the information sources. Moreover, the journalists are politically engaged at the side of the Germans or controlled by the censorship. Finally, the information sources are exclusively German.
On basis of the collected information, we can however say that the perspective is absolutely optimistic from the occupant’s point of view. Compared with the official interpretation given by History, the only common points are the decisive aspect of the event as well as the numerous losses linked to the violence of the fights. All the newspapers understood that the fate of the war is sealed in Normandy.
But the traditional image of the liberation of the occupied European peoples linked to the Landing on Normandy in History books is here inverted. Here, the Anglo-Saxon and the Soviet Allies are presented as Barbarians whereas the Germans play the role of the defenders of a two thousands years old civilization. This “national” perspective is absolutely in harmony with the Dr. Goebbels’ propaganda which presents Germany as the elected people leading a crusade against the so-called “Judaic-Bolshevist conspiracy” of which the European people are victims. That way , the vassal countries, such as Belgium, must give their morale support to the liberation war led by the 3rd Reich against the enemies of Europe.
Thus we can say in short that the Belgian press, obedient to the Germans, has subtly presented the event, providing numerous authentic information about the Landing in order to disarm the reader’s distrust and that way to easily pass its ideological message.
