Contextualisation of the sourceThe radio news article commemorated 50 years of the forming of the EEC, in March 2007. As part of the article interviews were carried out with people involved in the original event or their relatives. Their opinions on the forming of the EEC were included together with facts about how the Treaty of Rome was written.
Interpretation of the sourceThis provides quite a positive view of the formation of the EEC. Anecdotal information on the writing of the Treaty provides a human side to the political story whilst the views of politicians involved provide a good indication of what was felt at the time about the Treaty and aim to create a united Europe. The various stages which led to the Treaty of Rome show how the EEC was not a foregone conclusion. In using this radio article students need to be aware of the expression of opinions in the broadcast, the effect of hindsight and the possibility of bias.
