When EWWiS had been established, some attempts to extend political and defensive aims were taken, however, it was too early. In June 1954 the diplomacy leaders of the countries belonging to Coal and Steel Union took further steps in that matter. They decided in Messyna that the only right and the least controversial possibility is to integrate in economy rather than in any other areas. On 25th March 1957 the conference in Rome took place, during which European Economy Union and European Union of Atomic Energy were established. Both agreements were introduced on 1st January 1958. Poland at that time belonged to Eastern Block – which means to countries under the supervision of the USSR. Therefore they could not to make any decision without the acceptance and knowledge of the USSR. Yet, The USSR at the same time was becoming more military powerful and protected some countries in Asia and Africa, offering them some military help. Easter countries decided to strengthen their economical and political union and established EWG to compensate their loss of colonies and military domination of the USSR. However, their illusions of domination in military race were alleviated when the USSR launched the first artificial satellite in October 1957.
