National Content: Poland

After 1957 Poland was totally dependent on the USSR. After the war, the country began a part of so called “eastern block”, with other countries dependent on the USSR; there was no possibility to take independent decisions both in political and economical issues. Therefore the country was not able to enter OEEC or take advantage of the Marshall plan, and as the result, Poland couldn’t claim the membership of EWG After the events in Poznañ in 1956, the process so called „destalinizacja” started but only in strict limits. Gomu³ka”s regime was by far more independent, more popular and flexible than the former one. But the ones who believed that Gomu³ka would create Republic of Poland as one of the democratic countries were to disappoint bitterly. Polish Party was loyal and orthodox towards soviet block. To cover nonconformity in the interior policy, they presented loyalty towards the USSR. However, there were some exceptions, as for example, the aid of the Red Cross during the riots in Hungary. The USSR presented its power to the whole Word, underling the fact they didn’t need anybody’s support. Polish media were utterly dependent on the authorities; they were supposed to promote official ideology of PZPR. The media which disobeyed were liquidated or their management was replaced by others worshiping official ideology.; there were, of course, some events of “destalinizacja” But freedom of press was just a dream.
