Contextualisation of the sourceThis is the issue of the day following the Rome Treaties which founded the EEC and the Euratom. The international political scene is dominated by the cold war and the bipolar system of USA and URSS.
Interpretation of the sourceThe author, Alfio Russo, talks about the meeting in the Bermuda Islands between the English and the American government leaders. In this article he stresses his worries regarding the defence of the world’s military balance. The author points out the international tensions, among which the very serious one concerning the division of the two Germanys which could represent a reason for the world’s unbalance. The article ends with a general sense of satisfaction because the discussions were focused on the problems regarding the defence for Europe and the world as a whole, highly important elements for future safety.
Original Contents (English Translation)The commentary by Alfio Russo regarding the meeting in the Bermuda Islands between government leaders from England and from the United States points out the problems, which may break the world’s balance. Among these problems he mentions the commercial embargo against China which would risk crashing the English-Asian commerce; the settlement of nuclear warheads in the English territories as an answer to the arrogant Soviet letter in which marshal Bulganin threatened a missile attack on London and Paris; the problem of the reunification of the two Germanys, urged several times. However the article is also accompanied by a satisfactory note because “Europe played its part in the discussions, since there have been talks about its defence, the reunification of Germany, the EEC for which the founding treaty was solemnly signed last night in Campidoglio […] the English and American government leaders, Eisenhower and Mac Millan, have expressed again their common interest in the development of the European unity within the Atlantic community as well as stressing out the importance of a closer cooperation between England and Europe.
