4. Bombings carried out by the Allies: reactions and collective memory

The clandestine newspapers, representing the large ideological streams in French-speaking Belgium, justify the Allies bombings as a strategy aiming only at purely military targets. In the “collective memory”, the air raids of the Allies remain as the cost to be paid for victory and most of the Belgian population considers the Allies as our liberators.

The official newspapers, controlled by the nazis, tried to emphazised the bombing, specially the civilian casualties.They all denounce the way the  Anglo americans are leading the war : using terrorist methods. In the french "collective memory", air raids of the allies, remain as a heavy cost to be paid for victory. The propaganda failed to turn the population agaist the allies.
