| Interpretation of the source | The article presents itself contradictory in different aspects. Titles seem to give importance to the scientific discovery, while the article Star of the East goes over and over the importance for the West of not staying behind in this new “war”. In spite of the first attempts of “thaw” among Italian political parties, in order to get over opposite extremism, is still tangible the political strain and contraposition provoked by the Cold War between USA and USSR. |
| Original Contents | Viene riconosciuta l’importanza dell’evento, augurandosi che, con l’aiuto di Dio, il mondo occidentale possa competere in questa conquista. L’evento in questione apre la strada a nuove imprese, che ci si augura siano utili anche ad altre nazioni occidentali. «Chi è Yuri Gagarin? Non importa che sia russo e non americano, sovietico e non occidentale, un “comunista” e non un “democratico”. Ci dispiace per coloro che si impoveriscono facendo queste distinzioni e specificazioni. Gagarin è «un uomo nel più ampio e rappresentativo significato di questa parola». L’articolo fa riferimento all’innato desiderio umano di fare progressi con la ricerca mirando ad una perfezione da eguagliare, propria di Dio, e continua così: «Noi non neghiamo l’importanza “nazionale” che il primo lancio nello spazio ha per l’URSS. Comprendiamo ed ammiriamo la gioia, l’entusiasmo e l’orgoglio con cui tutti i cittadini dell’URSS hanno salutato questo grande giorno, questo grande regalo che il loro Paese ha fatto ha tutta l’umanità». La tensione continua fra USA e URSS, dovuta alla “Guerra fredda”, è evidente in tutto l’articolo: l’evento è importante nella misura che rappresenta uno stimolo, una provocazione, a fare di più, a fare meglio. «La cosa migliore che possiamo dire a questa stella d’Oriente, innalzatasi oltre i cieli, è che ci auguriamo che la “nuova guerra” sia quella per la “competizione”. Possa la vita per la nuova umanità essere come una grande Olimpiade! Questo è l’augurio che facciamo agli uomini che combattono per trasformarsi da vermi striscianti in angeli, che volano nello spazio di Dio». |
| Original Contents (English Translation) | It acknowledges the importance of the event wishing that the Western world may compete in this conquest with the help of God. The event in question opened the road to new enterprises, possibly and wishfully available to other western countries as well. “Who is Yuri Gagarin? It does not matter that he is Russian and not American, a soviet man and not a western man, a “communist” and not a “democrat”. We feel pity for those who impoverish themselves making these distinctions and specifications. Gagarin is a “man in the widest and most representative meaning of the word”. It refers to the innate human desire to advance with research looking for a perfection to equate, God’s own, and then it continues: “We do not negate the “national” importance that the first launch into space has for the Soviet Union. We understand and admire the joy, the enthusiasm and the pride with which all the citizens in the Soviet Union greeted this great day, this great gift that their country gave to the whole humanity. The tension going on between the United States and the Soviet Union, due to the Cold War, is evident in the entire article: the event is important in the measure that it represents a stimulus, a provocation to do more, to do better. “ The best we can say to this star of the East that rose beyond the skies is that we wish that soon a star of the West will rise even higher”. The article ends with the hope that the “new war” may be that of “competition”: “May life for the new mankind be like a big Olympics! This is the wish we make for the men who fight to transform themselves from creeping worms into angels, flying in God’s space”. |
