Youri Gagarine was the first man to be sent in space by USSR in 1961. This flight took place during the Cold War and more precisely during a warming period of the Americano-Soviet relationship. Thus Belgium makes part of the Occidental Bloc and is a member of NATO. It is thus an ally of the USA.
