Interpretation of the sourceThe cine-newsreel offers, first of all, a brief history of the attempts made in the history of the mankind to win the gravity force, from the one made by Icarus to Gagarin. The event of April 12th, 1961 opens the way to the conquest of the space, something that could represent a new idea of relationships in a world divided by the “Cold War”, an idea of peace and brotherhood.

Incominciò Icaro con le sue fragili ali di cera e altri tentarono la stessa disperata impresa. Un cinese, dice una vecchia leggenda, si fece lanciare nello spazio da quarantasette razzi: partì, ma non tornò sulla terra. Leonardo da Vinci, il grande genio italiano, sognò a lungo la conquista dei cieli. La mongolfiera, nel 1793, è la prima grande conquista dell’uomo. I fratelli Wright, nel 1903, tentano in America il primo volo con un mezzo più pesante dell’aria. Tutti i sistemi sono buoni per sollevarsi, o tentare di sollevarsi, dalla terra. Laika è il primo essere vivente lanciato nello spazio; la seguono topolini e scimmiotte, che aprono la via alla conquista dell’uomo. Nei laboratori dell’Unione Sovietica decine di scienziati preparano il volo del primo cosmonauta. Tutto è pronto, squadriglie di aerei si levano per saggiare le condizioni atmosferiche: l’ora “X” si avvicina; l’ora “X” è scoccata! Il primo cosmonauta, Yuri Gagarin, è partito, la più grande avventura del secolo è cominciata. «Lancio effettuato con successo. L’astronave tra poco entrerà in orbita» La terra si allontana. Gagarin è solo nel cosmo, solo con i suoi strumenti di bordo: «Vedo la terra, è coperta di nebbia». In tutta la Russia l’attesa degli scienziati è spasmodica. «Sto bene, velocità 8 km al secondo, quota 200 km». La terra da lassù sembra una ben piccola cosa. La terra è lontana 175 km, ma Gagarin si allontana ancora fino a 302 km. Minuto per minuto, dai loro laboratori, gli scienziati seguono il volo del primo cosmonauta. È finalmente il segnale: Gagarin può tornare. «Gagarin sta atterrando» Ma come deve essergli sembrata lenta l’ultima parte del suo viaggio! La conquista dello spazio è cominciata, la luna, Marte, Venere, Giove, Saturno, Mercurio sono le tappe di domani e, in attesa di raggiungere i nuovi obiettivi, grazie ai rilievi effettuati durante i voli spaziali, gli uomini potranno scongiurare le ire della natura.
