The sources do not mirror the attack of Poland. The occupation of Danzig and the attack of Poland have to be seen in context. However, the occupation of Danzig is also connected to the decision in the Contract of Versaille, which ordered to divide Danzig from Germany against the will of the population (1938: 95% of the population were against a division). While Danzig was affiliated to the Polish custom and currency, many inhabitants still orientated themselves on the social and political developments in Germany (1933 the NSDAP won the elections). The affiliation of Danzig to Poland also has to be seen in the political context after World War One: the discrepancy between the idea of a right of self-determination and the safety-politics of the Allies became virulent. The attack and occupation of Poland was also the beginning of a European war. The non-aggression-pact between Russia and Germany also contained an agreement about the division of Poland. But additional territory for Germany and Russia was against the interest of France and England, because it destroyed the balance of power in Europe.
