| Contextualisation of the source | September 1st 1939. Germany has invaded Poland. Because of its alliance with Poland, France should go to war as well as Great Britain. Despite their will of peace, both countries can no longer retreat from Germany since Munich agreements. The first stage is general mobilization and the convening of parliaments for both countries. |

Lots of analogies are made with the first world war. “The curse of God” –the Huns-,”flew into a rage and slaughter…ethnic signs…from our dangerous neighbours”. There is again “demonization” of Germany. France will carry out its duty in the name of respect for human rights and justice.
War is unavoidable.

Le masque est tombé. En vain de tous les points du monde sont venus des appels à la paix. Hitler a pris la décision qui pour jamais rendra son nom exécrable aux hommes. Ce matin, les bombes allemandes ont commencé l’œuvre de terreur et de destruction. La guerre est là, cette guerre que jusqu’à la dernière minute nous nous sommes efforcés d’éviter. Mais que faire devant un adversaire qui faisait mine, il y a vingt-quatre heures à peine, de se prêter à des négociations, et qui soudain est pris de sa fureur de massacre, de cette joie de nuire qui est, hélas ! la marque ethnique de nos éternels et dangereux voisins !
Il a tout essayé, d’abord pour dissocier la France et l’Angleterre, puis pour les terrifier, puis pour détruire leur résistance nerveuse par des alternatives savamment calculées de sourires et de menaces. A la fin, ayant échoué dans ses tentatives, il s’est décidé à revenir à la violence, qui est son suprême atout. Dans la nuit, il s’est hâté de ratifier le pacte germano-russe, honte des deux régimes, et sa honte particulière à lui, puisque ce traité dévoile ses mensonges et sa mauvaise foi. Aussitôt, sûr de ne pas trouver de résistance chez Staline, il s’est rué sur un peuple plus faible que le sien, et qu’il va tenter de réduire promptement pour se retourner vers nous et nous dire : « A qui le tour ? »
Mais il faut à de pareils projets non seulement le consentement des hommes, mais l’agrément du destin. Sur tous les points de l’univers vont se dresser ceux qui ne seraient vivre dans l’oppression triomphante, ceux qui placent en tête de leurs raisons d’exister la liberté, le respect du droit et de la justice, la loyauté.
Et nous, français et Anglais qui nous sommes dressés les premiers contre l’évangile hitlérien de brutalité, de haine et de mauvaise foi, nous gardons intacts notre sang froid et notre résolution. Hitler vient d’ouvrir dans l’Histoire du monde des pages douloureuses et terribles. Mais c’est lui qui périra, ainsi que son malheureux pays. Nous sommes forts, nous sommes prêts. Nous pouvons compter sur l’avenir. Non, il n’est pas vrai, il n’est pas possible qu’un homme puisse tout asservir, qu’il puisse bafouer tout ce qui est honneur et noblesse. Les fléaux de Dieu ont toujours été, à la fin abandonné de Dieu.

The mask has fallen.Calls to peace have vainly come from every corner of the world. Hitler made the decision which for ever, will make his name hated by men. This morning, the German bombs started the works of terror and destruction. War is on. That war we strove to avoid until the last minute. But what can you do when you have to face the enemy who pretended to enter into negotiations only twenty-four hours ago and who suddenly flies into wild fits of anger and massacre, being delighted to harm, which unfortunately shows the ethnic mark of our eternal and dangerous enemy!
He tried everything, first to divide France and England, then to destroy their nervous resistance with alternatives cunningly planned with smiles and threats. But, at the end, because he failed in his attempts, he made the decision to go back to violence which is his supreme asset. During the night, he hastened to ratify the German Soviet Pact: the two regime’s disgrace and his own peculiar disgrace too, since that pact unveils his lies and dishonesty. Straight away, being sure he would find no resistance from Stalin, he pounced on a people weaker than his own that he will try to reduce swiftly so as to turn to us, asking us: who is the next?
But not only must men’s consents be necessary to such plans, but also the approval of fate. In every nook and cranny of the universe, those who would refuse to live in the triumphant oppression, those who place ahead their reason of being: freedom, respect for human rights, justice and loyalty, will rise up.
As for us, French and English citizens who rise up first against the Hitlerian gospel and bad faith, we keep our head and resolution intact. Hitler has just opened painful and terrible pages in the history of the world. But he is the one who will perish his shameful country too. We are strong, we are ready. We can rely on future. No, it can’t be true, it can’t be possible to let a man enslave everyone and scorn honour and nobleness. The curses of God have always been forsaken by God.
