Critical Interpretation of the event starting form the Sources

The event itself is presented as a tragedy ("La Gazette de Liège" and "La Wallonie") and it is associated with the Great War by some people.
But in our country the reflection also concerns the politics of neutrality. The left press appears very critical toward this politics. "La Wallonie", socialist newspaper, clearly clashes with "Vers l’Avenir". Georges Hubin, the 76 years old socialist deputy, enlists in the French army and he is applauded by the left newspaper but firmly condemned by the more conservative newspaper.
According to "La Gazette de Liège", the most important thing is to keep the country out of the war.
The stance of the newspaper "Le Soir" is quite woolly because this daily "was close to the government, particularly close to its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paul-Henri Spaak. So it couldn’t criticize his politics of independence but it sentimentally takes side with France and England". (Interview with Jean Corvilain, past Director, quoted by HERENG Jacques, Le Soir dans l’Histoire, éd. Luc Pire, Bruxelles, 2003.)
Especially the newspaper "Pourquoi Pas" ? but also "Le Patriote illustré" express their sympathy for the Polish people and point out the Hitler’s responsibility in the conflict.
