| Contextualisation of the source | « La Wallonie » is a French-speaking newspaper. Started in 1919, this daily paper of left socialist and syndicalist trend is edited in Liege. It is the property of the General Federation of the Belgian Workers (FGTB) and more particularly of the Provincial Federation of the Metalworkers. It is mostly read by the popular class. | Interpretation of the source | “La Wallonie” takes 3 pages for the event (the first page and the pages 5 and 7). The 2/3 of the first page are dedicated to Gagarin’s flight. On the first page, the editorial speaks about the exploit of Gagarin but underlines that there are much more important things to do on Earth, that there are a lot of social problems and that Belgium is a backward country for many issues. ( We can thus feel by this article that the newspaper belongs to a Syndicate). A large article entitled “Not that” also on the first page denounces the arms race and the possible exploitation of the space conquest (the daily paper develops here pacific arguments). The 2/3 of the page 5 are dedicated to Gagarin’s flight, another article also mentions reactions on the flight of persons from different countries. Still on that page 5, some extracts out of British newspapers such as the “Daily Express” and the “Daily Sketch” are reprinted, these ones express some doubts about Gagarin’s flight. Finally on the page 7, “La Wallonie” publishes the reactions of two professors of the University of Liège and makes a comparison between USA and USSR in the spatial field. |
| Original Contents | L’incroyable exploit soviétique a bouleversé le monde entier. Les lampions sont éteints, la fête est finie. On commence à réfléchir. L’incroyable exploit soviétique a provoqué une impression considérable dans le monde. On y a vu la consécration du genre humain. La victoire de l’homme sur l’espace. On a entrevu des possibilités illimitées, pour les générations futures, quant à la découverte de nouvelles sources d’énergie et à la conquête de vastes domaines jusqu’à ce jour inaccessibles. Et puis, on est revenu sur terre (comme le cosmonaute) et alors on est rentré brutalement avec la réalité. Le genre humain est grand mais le mauvais genre humain effraye. Nos querelles mesquines nous paraissent ridicules devant un tel exploit. Nos méthodes d’enseignement sont totalement dépassées par celles des grandes nations et notre première réaction est un sentiment de honte. Notre pays, en proie à des antagonismes purement politiques, est de plus en plus dépassé par les autres nations plus dynamiques. A l’échelle mondiale des guerres meurtrières sèment la mort et la misère. Des milliards sont consacrés aux armements destructeurs tandis que des milliers de personnes meurent de faim... Et un homme (qu’importe la nationalité) est parti à la conquête de l’espace. Mais à quoi bon ces réflexions désabusées ? Les plus belles victoires, avec le recul du temps, ne deviennent-elles pas de véritables monstruosités... A cause de ce genre humain si mal employé.
