Contextualisation of the source | The Times is regarded as a conservative newspaper. A series of reports on the opening days of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial appeared on the 20th November 1945 and in the following days. |
Interpretation of the source | Whilst reporting that the war crimes would open as planned on 20th November this article makes clear the historical importance of the event and is critical of the attempts to delay it’s start. Such actions are regarded by the article as devaluing the trial and it’s historic importance.
The report goes to considerable lengths to describe some of the defendants and the conditions under which they have been kept, with clothes and legal council having been provided. This might be to provide a contrast between the civilised nature of their captivity and the brutal nature in which they conducted the war.
The civilised nature of the trial from the very opening day is being emphasised here.
