The sources provide a limited view of the events of the 20th August 1968 in that they all come from middle class newspapers. (The lack of availability of a wider range of media sources hampers a more balanced view of the event). They all condemn Russian interference in Czechoslovakia both before the invasion, when Russia was open and highly critical of the reforms being brought about by Dubcek and his government and of the events of 20th August 1968. They suggest that this is a betrayal of friendship and that after events in Hungary, it shows Russia as being a country prepared to use violence to maintain it’s position as leader of the soviet bloc countries. The sources also suggest that events in Czechoslovakia did not have unanimous support from all soviets and as a result could lead to splits within the party. The portrayal of Czechoslovakia as a country wanting to gain freedom from Russia and living under Russian repression is also highlighted. The Czechs are regarded as being a quiet, non-violent people at the mercy of the larger, well armed Russia and it’s Warsaw Pact allies.
