National Content: Italy

The nature of the sources used allows us to understand the way the event was presented to the public through the written word as well as images. The sources do no allow for a critical interpretation of the event. Through them we can see a few crucial aspects presented at the Eichmann’s trial in Jerusalem such as its legitimy, problems concerning individual and collective responsibilities, the problem of the “absolute evil”, the consent and the active role of individuals and of groups during the massacre. However, instead of pointing at problems and giving information, the subject is treated in such a way that it evokes emotions and it is dominated by ideological, political and prejudicial positions. On top of this, there is a very small number of articles found in all national papers, only one of which was on first page. Wherever the matter is discussed, there is a complete omission of the alliance between Germany and Italy, the European dimension of the Shoah, and of the fascist role in it. The fascists started the Shoah in 1938 and actively cooperated to the deportation.
