Description of the source1941 the bunker l was built by a lot of people. The walls were built of concrete because they had to offer a safe protection against the bombes. The pictures show of how many layers the walls were made to get a bombe-safe construction. The thickness of the walls is up to one meter. The construction was as well above the ground as well as under the ground. One could think that the construction took a long time. But in fact during the war everything has to be done very fast.
Contextualisation of the sourceThe bunker was built in the middle of the war and is one of the numerous bunkers above the ground in Düsseldorf. This type of bunker was necessary because there was not enough safe space for the people in the city. Today the bunker is used for flats, store rooms and trial space for music bands. It is in private possession. The bunker has a high number of rooms used for various purposes. It shows from outside now a dove of peace painted in 1982 by the peace movement as a symbol for peace and freedom in the world.
Interpretation of the sourceThe bunker was a refuge for many people in the time of the dangerous bombings (40 only in Düsseldorf) and saved a lot of lifes. Contemporary witness report about very bad situations and a very heavy time because one had to survive in a very small space with hundreds of people. The bunkers are not blwon up but used as a symbol against wars. Nowadays they are used for civil purposes. Still today you can see traces of the war on the outside walls of the bunker. And you can imagine the effects of the city bombing on the image of the city of Düsseldorf.
