Syntethic Chronology
- January 1943: during the conference in Casablanca (Morocco), allied leaders take the decision to invade Sicily; this plan delays the project of an invasion of France (discussed since 1940)
- August 1943: during the allied strategic conference in Quebec (Canada), begin officially the preparations for the invasion of France, called “operation Overlord”
- December 1943: the American general Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander of Allied troops in the Mediterranean area, in appointed Commander in chief of the expeditionary force in France
- April 1944: massive allied bombings against means and ways of communication, and against German airfields in Northern France
- June 6th, 1944: at 5.30 a.m. allied battleships open fire on Normandy’s shore; is the beginning of “operation Overlord”
- End of June 1944: Allied troops reach and subdue the port and the city of Cherbourg (in practice destroyed)
- July 20th, 1944: fails the attempt on Hitler’s life
- August 25th, 1944: after several serious defeats suffered by the Germans, French, Polish and US troops enter in Paris
