| Contextualisation of the source | « Pourquoi Pas ? » is a weekly newspaper founded in 1910. Since its first publishing, this newspaper gave humorous and satirical comments on the Belgian news. From 1910 to the sixties, this weekly had a great impact on the political and cultural opinion in Belgium. In 1973, the newspaper has been sold toan insurance company. | Interpretation of the source | The reader is in front of two pages : the left one is dedicated to pictures of Prague showing the Czechoslovakians offering resistance to the Soviet tanks. On the right page, the article relates the events. The journalist writes freely as if he was telling a story. He uses some typographical marks of novel (quotation marks, hyphens, dialogues,…). The journalist calls upon the reader as he had a decision power on the Czechoslovakian events. He wonders why the Russians intervene that way. He makes some quick conclusions on the Russian mentality deploring their aggressive attitude. As opposed to that, he thanks the Czechoslovakian courage facing these events. The journalist puts the reader on the side of the Czechoslovakian people, and he tries to share his questions and emotions with the reader. |
| Original Contents | EXTRAIT : « Moscou s’est trompé. Moscou n’avait pas prévu ce qui, pourtant, était prévisible. C’est terriblement alarmant dans la mesure où les dirigeants du Kremlin sont, en fait, qu’on le veuille ou non, les maîtres du monde avec les Américains. S’ils ont été capables d’évaluer aussi mal les éléments d’une situation donnée, de poser un acte aussi grave et irréfléchi, alors c’est une des garanties les plus solides de la paix qui s’évapore. Tout s’est passé comme si les Russes s’étaient persuadés que la question tchécoslovaque serait réglée en douze ou vingt-quatre heures. En réalité, rien n’a été réglé, ni en douze ni en vingt-quatre heures, au contraire. Ils n’avaient pas de gouvernement de rechange, pas le moindre Quisling et ils n’avaient, d’évidence, pas prévu la résistance tchécoslovaque. C’est affolant. Sans doute l’opération ratée va-t-elle se solder, sur le plan intérieur russe, par la liquidation – pas tout de suite ; dans trois mois, six mois… - des responsables de ce ratage. Il n’en subsistera pas moins, dans le monde entier, y compris chez les communistes français, italiens, belges, etc., une crainte lancinante : - De quoi les Russes ne sont-ils pas capables ? Pourquoi ? Pourquoi, n’écoutant manifestement aucun des conseils qui leur furent donnés par leurs alliés, ont-ils déclenché ce processus qui se solde par une perte de prestige ? » |
