D-Day E.Rommel

Somebody in Italy views Rommel  as one of the few "good" German generals of WWII, compared to the other ones, what do other countries think about this character, since it caused a lot of trouble in Africa and Normandy? Expecially are ther any people in germany who still consider him a "hero" ? thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: D-Day E.Rommel

I would suggest another view: without any doubt Rommel was one of the best generals of WW2 (don't forget that Germany, as well as Italy, didn't have so many good generals during the war). But the point, I think, is another one. We can't say that he caused troublles in Northern Africa and Normany: as a general of the Wehrmacht he tried to make his part...until he was forced by the Fuhrer to suicide (October 1944) after the attempt to HItler's life in August 1944. At the same time it's normal that Italian people consider him different than horrible people like Kesserling or Kappler, who really caused death and sufference in Italy, even if every former Italian soldier could never forget how German troops treated the Italians during the retreat in Northern Africa. As well as everything else in the history, we can say in this case that an important protagonist cuold be seen in different ways, and maybe it's useless to enclose him in a closed category (hero - not hero). Everything, everyone, should be completely considered and analyzed. From my point of view (but I don't think to know enough the character of Rommel), we should consider him as someone who paid with the life the fact of being first of all a soldier, and not a part of the Nazi system.
Bye everyone

Re: D-Day E.Rommel

can we consider Rommel as a less responsable political general seeing that he did not take part in the European issue, being in conference with the African problem?

Re: D-Day E.Rommel

Rommel was famous after war in Germany. For my opinion because of his success (Wüstenfuchs) and his resistance agaist Hitler, wich is not realy clear (or are there new facts?).
